SPILKLEEN HISTORY
SpilKleen, Division of AgraMax Inc. was founded in 1993 by Stephen Laakso, the owner and President, in Toronto, as a supplier of primarily granular absorbent products for customers faced with the need to clean up and safely dispose of chemical and oil related spills. The business grew and flourished over a few short years due to the dedication and quality customer service of Steve Laakso and the SpilKleen team when challenged to meet the customer’s needs.
By the mid 90’s, SpilKleen recognized the customer’s needs for new and advanced spill control products. The company started to add sorbent pads & rolls, booms, pillows and socks to it’s arsenal of products ready to meet the customer’s domestic disaster requirements. Due to the rapid growth that was experienced by SpilKleen in the latter part of the 1990’s, additional steps needed to be taken to secure a steady source of quality sorbent products that met and exceeded industry requirements while keeping costs at an acceptable level for the customer.
In 2000, SpilKleen forged a financial and technological partnership with two manufacturing facilities in the United States that provided the company with a secure source of the highest quality spill control products in North America. SpilKleen was also able to provide these products to their customers at industry acceptable costs even when the oil industry was experiencing dramatic price increases worldwide for polypropylene the main component of the sorbent products.
The business continued to grow and SpilKleen moved to their new corporate office and greatly expanded distribution center in Mississauga, Ontario in 2001. The company further expanded the spill control product line by adding industry specific spill kits that could be customized to suit the customer’s unique requirements. A full line of secondary containment products was also added to meet new demands in the industry for the proper clean-up of environmental spills and to meet government standards.
In 2001, SpilKleen also turned their attention to Western Canada and opened a fully stocked sales office and distribution center in Calgary, Alberta. This new investment set the stage for rapid growth in the West and also prompted the company to enhance their customer product training program by holding seminars across Canada to ensure the correct products are used for domestic disasters and secondary containment.
The growth of the business and Stephen Laakso’s dedication to the industry was further reinforced in 2007 when SpilKleen formed a distribution relationship for spill products in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The commitment was made to carry a full line of spill products in Halifax to handle the needs of the customer’s in Eastern Canada which enabled SpilKleen to fulfill their commitment to the Canadian market coast to coast.
SpilKleen has also taken a major step in 2007 by adding the new ColdForm Technology line-up of products manufactured by one of their financial partners in the United States as stock items in all of the distribution centers across Canada. This is exciting news for SpilKleen’s customers as the new technology consists of higher performance materials that are not affected by skyrocketing oil prices. They perform 20%-40% better and they reduce the dependency on oil.

SpilKleen collects and retains information about our customers so we can better provide our customers with the products and services that form our day to day business relationship.

-financial and billing information which includes credit history and banking information at this time
-contact information which includes addresses, e-mail addresses, telephone & fax numbers and the names of individuals doing business with the company
-carrier preferences and shipping directions
SpilKleen only uses this information for the purposes of the companies doing business together and to meet legal requirements.
